Als Ergebnis einer intensiven Recherche, die im Juni 2011 von zwei öffentlichen Portfolio-Tagen begleitet wurde, liefert die Ausstellung „Linzer Augen“ in zwei Teilen exemplarische Einblicke in fotografische Konzeptionen von Studierenden an der Linzer Kunstuniversität. Die Auswahl erfolgte unabhängig von konkreten Studienrichtungen und reagierte auf eine Vielzahl an differenzierten Konzepten im Einsatz der Fotografie. 

Trotz der Bandbreite an individuellen Strategien war es möglich, für die Ausstellung im Salzamt ein kuratorisches Konzept mit zwei Schwerpunktsetzungen zu entwickeln. So lassen sich die ausgewählten Arbeiten von insgesamt 25 Einzelpositionen und Gruppen zu den thematischen Blöcken Landschaft sowie Porträt zusammenfassen. Diese beiden – auch in zwei Ausstellungsteilen vorgestellten - Begriffsfelder erweisen sich als inhaltliche Klammern für jeweils spezifische fotografische Konzepte, in denen Inszenierungsformen, dokumentarische Ansätze und biografische Spurensuchen unternommen sowie individuelle und kollektive Bildzusammenhänge ausgelotet werden. Dadurch vermag das Ausstellungsprojekt „Linzer Augen“ insgesamt einen abwechslungsreichen Einblick in einen ausgesprochen lebendigen Zugriff von Studierenden der Linzer Kunstuniversität auf das Medium Fotografie zu liefern. Die Ausstellung wird durch einen Katalog begleitet.

In her lecture Katharina Gruzei will give an overview of her practice that incorporates several medias - predominantly Photography, Video, Performance and Sound. In her work the interest in boarders between still and moving image unfold the history of image production itself and arouse thoughts on the authenticity of pictures deeply connected to the construction of history. She researched flee-market photographs in regard to the staging of the body in early bourgeois photography which are a trace of gender specific stereotyping. The use of archives as a form of appropriation opens the field to re-writing history and potential additions. Artistic practices like collecting, arranging, re-organizing, repeating and remixing are being discussed within the presentation of the projects. Most recent projects are site-specific and deal with space, its use and the recall of the collective memory. The occupation of public space by diverse strategies seems to be a process that gains increasing importance within her artistic approach.

Katharina Gruzei studies Experimental Art and Art & Cultural Science in
Linz, Austria. She studied abroad at the University of California Santa Barbara and in the class of Katharina Sieverding for Visual Cultural Studies in Berlin. Among receiving various Awards and stipends she held a guest lecturer at Stanford University California in 2009. She is currently traveling in the Caucasus and spontaneously dropping in at CCAT.

კატარინა გრუცე ლექციაში მიმოიხილავს თავის პრაქტიკას, რომელიც აერთიანებს რამდენიმე მედიას - ფოტოგრაფია, ვიდეო, პერფორმანსი და ხმა(Sound). მის ნამუშევრებში, ინტერესი უძრავი და მოძრავი გამოსახულებებს საზღვრებს შორის, ფარდას ხდის თვითონ ნამუშევრის პროდუქციის ისტორიას. აზრს წარმართავს სურათების ავთენტურობაზე, რაც მჭიდროდ უკავშირდება ისტორიის კონსტრუქციას. კატარინა იკვლევდა ე.წ. მეორადების ბაზრის ფოტოებს(flee-market photographs), ადრეული პერიოდის ბურჟუაზიული დადგმული ფოტოგრაფიის ჩათვლით, სადაც ასახულია გარკვეული გენდერული სტერეოტიპების კვალი. იგი ისაუბრებს არქივების გამოყენებაზე, რომელიც ისტორიის ხელახლა გადაწერის და მასში პოტენციური დამატებების გაკეთების საშუალებას იძლევა. არტისტის პრაქტიკა, როგორიცაა შეგროვება, დახარისხება, რეორგანიზება, გამეორება და შერევა, განხილული იქნება პროექტების პრეზენტაციასთან ერთად. მისი უკანასკნელი პროექტები დაკავშირებულია ადგილთან და სივრცესთან, მათ გამოყენებასთან და კოლექტიურ მეხსიერებაში ხელახლა ასახვასთან. საზოგადოებრივი სივრცის ოკუპაცია არის პროცესი, რომელიც დიდი მნიშვნელობას იძენს მისი, როგორც არტისტის პრაქტიკაში.

კატარინა გრუცე სწავლობს ექსპერიმენტალურ ხელოვნებასა და კულტურის მეცნიერებებს ლინცში, ავსტრიაში. ის სწავლობდა საზღავრგარეთ სანტა ბარბარას უნივერსიტეტში, კალიფორნიაში; ვიზუალური კულტურის კვლევებს ბერლინში კატარინა სივერდინგის კლასში. მიღებული აქვს სხვადასხვა ჯილდოები და სტიპენდიები, მათ შორის სტენფორდის უნივერსიტეტის.

The exhibition “Farewell to Longing” frees the term homeland from its connotation charged with longing. Correspondingly, the artistic positions reject an “iconography of roaring deer”, since this would celebrate homeland primarily in its kitsch antithesis. While retrogressive interpretation patterns locate the concept of the homeland as a retroactive construction and thereby clarify the past, the project curated by Claudia Marion Stemberger turns its back on the powerful topic of the lost homeland. The exhibition concept calls for a forward-looking view of the idea of homeland – not just beyond its ideological discrediting, but also above all beyond the escapism of nostalgic traditions of interpretation.

The departure from nostalgia at the same time brings up the question of how longing might otherwise be thought of generatively. Such a productive reoccupation opens a hopeful area of opportunity without, however, covering the past with amnesia, and from the perspective of social psychology it particularly stresses that the feeling of being at home is related to action –since the realisation of utopias requires personal contribution. The international selection of twelve artists therefore draws attention to subjective facets of contemporary individual strategies of belonging – whether they are material, communicative, emotional, reflexive or imaginative.

Die Ausstellung Farewell to Longing löst den Begriff der Heimat aus seiner sehnsuchtsbeladenen Konnotation. Entsprechend verweigern sich die künstlerischen Positionen einer „Ikonographie röhrender Hirsche", würde eine solche doch Heimat vornehmlich in ihren verkitschten Gegenbildern zelebrieren. Während rückwärtsgewandte Interpretationsmuster den Heimatbegriff als nachträgliche Konstruktion setzen und damit die Vergangenheit verklären, verabschiedet sich das von Claudia Marion Stemberger kuratierte Projekt vom wirkmächtigen Topos der verlorenen Heimat. Das Ausstellungskonzept fragt nach einer zukunftsoffenen Sichtweise auf den Heimatbegriff - nicht nur jenseits der ideologischen Diskreditierung, sondern vor allem jenseits des Eskapismus nostalgischer Deutungstraditionen.

Die Verabschiedung der Nostalgie fordert sogleich die Frage heraus, wie Sehnsucht denn andernfalls generativ zu denken wäre. Eine solche produktive Neubesetzung eröffnet einen hoffnungsvollen Möglichkeitsraum, ohne jedoch die Geschichte mit einer Amnesie zu belegen, und betont besonders aus der Sicht der Sozialpsychologie die Tätigkeitsbezogenheit von Beheimatung - erfordert doch auch die Realisierung von Utopien eine Eigenleistung. Daher lenkt die internationale Auswahl der zwölf KünstlerInnen den Blick auf subjektive Facetten individueller Beheimatungsstrategien der Gegenwart - seien sie materiell, kommunikativ, emotional, reflexiv oder imaginativ.

Dialoge I - IV will be shown at Oodaaq Festival in Rennes, France. Unfortunately I could not go there for the screening but I very much enjoyed the playful webpage with lots of poetic pictures and thoughts. Have a look!

This will be the first edition of the Oodaaq Festival of poetic images of all kind. In partnership with several local and international cultural structures, they intent to show orignial video and photographic works of young artists.

During this period, the island of Oodaaq will be visible in order to create a new, poetic map of the city. The festival is meant to strengthen the relations between the artists and between the artists and the public. The attentive stroller can see our island emerge and meet its nomad inhabitants, explorers of the sensible world.

Oodaaq is an island that has been discovered in 1975 northeast of Greenland. This bank of gravel and silt, covered by several meters of ice, is said to be the most notherly emerged land on earth.
It is on this inaccessible and invisible territory that they settled their camp, in order to explore contemporary artistic creation.

They like to think about L'Oeil d'OOdaaq (a 1901 law non-profit organisation, founded in march 2008) as the projection of this island, an imaginary place, made of meetings, creations and public events.
It's nomad inhabitants are travelling the world and forming an artist collective constantly growing and evolving.

Loop is a specialized platform for platforms dedicated to moving-image practices that culminates in the annual international meeting point in Barcelona.

THE LOOP FESTIVAL is a dynamical event, constantly adjusting to the changing needs of the various agents involved in the moving-image field. It includes exhibitions, screenings, presentations, conferences and a fair.

THE LOOP FESTIVAL is also a city project aimed at connecting local and international platforms, resulting in the creation of alliances between institutions, artists, curators, festivals, producers, distributors, galleries and universities, among others. This interconnection allows LOOP to reach a wide audience composed of the most diverse kinds of public.

Videoholica Festival was invited to take part at the THE LOOP FESTIVAL 2011. The invited international festivals will participate in Barcelona under the presentation methodology Pecha-Kucha entitled Speaker’s Corner. The event will take place the 20th and 21st of May at the MediaLounge, located at the basement floor of the Hotel Catalonia Ramblas, where the LOOP Fair takes place.

My piece Dialoge I-IV was chosen for the Videoholica special selection and travels with them throughout Europe ever since.

THE LOOP FESTIVAL is active throughout the year, producing activities in collaboration with national and international institutions and agents.

Dialoge I-IV will be shown by Visual Container in the Videoart Project Space [.BOX] in Milan Italy. It is traveling to Milan with the special selection of the Varna Filmfestival where I have shown the piece last summer.

[. BOX] presents BEST OF Milan by Videoholica, the most important international festival of video art in Bulgaria, annually presented to Varna on the Black Sea.

The staff of [. BOX] is proud to host VIDEOHOLICA space in Milan, to share the best from the third edition of VIDEOHOLICA held during the International Biennale of Visual Arts in 2010, during the first year of [. BOX].

The curatorial team is composed of 2010 Videoholica Pavlina Mladenova and Neno Belchev who selected 152 artworks of 138 artists selected 512 video artists in the competition of 326 in total, from 51 countries worldwide.

Videoholica, is one of the most important partners of VisualContainer which in 2009 participated as a guest at the festival by displaying a selection of international and italian Video Art in 2010 as the jury of the Festival, along with other foreign guests.

My piece Dialoge I-IV will be shown on Thursday in the program "Sections Italia + Going East". It is traveling to Espressioni with the special selection of the Varna Filmfestival where I have shown the piece last summer.

Espressioni Video Festival was founded in 2006 by a group of film enthusiasts and professionals with the goal of creating an annual international film festival in Milan. The aim is to establish a major film event to enrich and enliven the local film culture, but moreover, to become an international attraction. We believe that by building up an innovative film festival in Milan, our foreign guests will have a unique opportunity to participate in an exciting cultural event, as well as visiting a city renowned for its dynamic culture.

The Espressioni Video Festival is organised by Perypezye Urbane. It is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the distribution and appreciation of European films in Italy. This Milan-based festival showcases the variety of Italian experimental cinema each year.

Festival selections range from documentary on performing arts to experimental films and videos. The Festival calls attention to the importance of preserving Europe’s film heritage, creating a network with other festivals and displaying films designed to stress the lively cultural climate within European audiovisual production.

Espressioni Film Festival in this 2011 edition has created a network with Italian and European organizations, bringing new artistic works from centre-East and West Europe. Milan also becomes the place to distrubute some of the most interesting videos by Coreografo Elettronico, the main video-dance prize within Italian bounderies.

By following a geo-politics approach, Espressioni Film Festival presents the “Going East” section with the films from East Europe, from Israel and Taiwan, the “Going West” section with the films from West Europe and America. The section Italy is spread in two days with Italian authors. In addition two important events will be held on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th: the screeing of the four videos prizewinners of the 2010 edition Coreografo Elettronico on Saturday; on the same Sunday night the screening of “Scuola d’artisti” by Massimo Volta about the most famous ballet Academy of the world and of the docu trailer dedicated to ballet dancer Valter Venditti.

ESPRESSIONI ITINERANT TOUR

The concept of “itinerant” aims to share the film heritage, specifically in Italy, from the Northern to the Southern part of the country, creating an ideal creative link within the Italian territory. Then the festival heads straight for Europe, to set off to the opposite part of the world, Brazil, in order to push the territorial boundaries and embrace an international cooperation. This network is intended to serve as a way of building bridges without frontiers and to foster true artistic exchange and production.

The festival will travel to:

Siena – Rome – Bari – Catania (Italy), Nis-Sombor (Serbia), Podgorica (Montenegro), Varna (Bulgaria), Izmir (Turkey) and Praia de Iraçema (Brazil)

The fifth curated international portfolio viewing featuring young emerging European photographers will be held on the weekend of 28 to 30 January 2011. As in the previous year, 42 photographers were invited to present their work for two hours to the public and a selected team of experts. The participants have been chosen from among some 130 nominated photographers.

 Plat(t)form 2011 is aimed at professionals such as curators, gallery owners, publishers, editors and photographers. At the same time the event offers interested visitors an opportunity of discovering the work of young photographers and artists and of meeting them in person.

Junge FotografInnen und KünstlerInnen präsentieren ihre Portfolios

Am Wochenende vom 28./29./30. Januar 2011 findet mit der Plat(t)form 2011 das fünfte kuratierte internationale Portfolio-Viewing für junge "emerging artists" aus Europa statt. Es sind wiederum 42 Fotografen und Fotografinnen eingeladen, ihre Werke und Dossiers während je zwei Stunden der Öffentlichkeit und einem Expertenteam vorzustellen. Die FotografInnen wurden nominiert und dann aus rund 130 Eingaben ausgewählt. Es zeigen immer sechs Teilnehmende gleichzeitig ihre Arbeiten.
 Plat(t)form 2011 richtet sich an Professionals wie Kuratoren, Galeristen, Verleger, Redakteure und Fotografen. Gleichzeitig bietet es neugierigen BesucherInnen eine hervorragende Gelegenheit, junge FotografInnen und KünstlerInnen sowie deren Arbeiten persönlich kennen zu lernen.

Die "Grande Filiale" ist en Film Kunst & Musik Festival, gegründet im Jahr 2000 von der Gruppe "Kommando Hasenpfuhlstrasse" in Speyer am Rhein. Es ist en unabhängiges, nicht kommerzielles und nicht institutionell gefördertes Festival. Darüber hinaus ist das Spektrum der "Grande Filiale" angereichert durch Konzerte, DJ Sets, Performance, selten Bildende Kunst, Wein Wasser und heuer "Vogelspinnen mit Senf"- ein nachmittägliches Forum mit Filmen, Gesprächen und Essen für FilmemacherInnen und Gäste.

We all love the anticipation of looking forward to something special. And, in the same way, we love a story that makes us hang on every word until we find out what happens. What if we think of an exhibition as a gesture of inventing a story or stories composed of different works, images, objects and references? And what if we think of an exhibition space as the narrative basis to create a multilayered experience generating anticipation, imagination, and mystery?

“Sweet Anticipation” sets out to explore how to play with the idea of narrative in the form of exhibition making, may it be a thriller, fantasy, or love story. Formed around layers of incomplete narratives and fragments of anticipation, the exhibition wonders about the collective and personal imaginaries at work when we devise our own follow ups, actively taking part in shaping the flow of narratives. As a supplement to the exhibition, a reading space of favorite narratives selected by the members who applied to take part in “Sweet Anticipation,” the staff, and the curator will take place to mark the sphere for the collective imagination of the Salzburger Kunstverein. Wir alle lieben die Erwartungshaltung, die Vorfreude auf etwas Besonderes. Und wir lieben Geschichten, die uns fesseln und nicht loslassen, bis wir herausgefunden haben, was geschehen ist. Und was geschieht, wenn man eine Ausstellung als Plattform für die Erfindung einer oder mehrerer Geschichten betrachtet, die aus verschiedenen Arbeiten, Bildern, Objekten und Referenzen zusammengesetzt sind? Oder einen Ausstellungsort als narrative Klammer, um einen vielschichtigen Erfahrungsraum zu schaffen, der Erwartung erweckt, die Imagination anregt und Geheimnisse offenbart?

„Sweet Anticipation“ hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, zu erforschen, wie sich mit den Mitteln der Erzählung im Rahmen der Gestaltung einer Ausstellung spielen lässt – das Resultat könnte ein Krimi, Fantasy oder eine Liebesgeschichte sein. Die als Dialog zwischen unvollendeten Erzählungen und fragmentarisch erfassten Erwartungen angelegte Ausstellung hinterfragt die kollektiven und individuellen Vorstellungen, die die Fortschreibung unserer Geschichten beeinflussen, wobei die Erzählstruktur aktiv mitgestaltet wird.

Ergänzend zur Ausstellung wird ein Lesebereich mit ausgewählten Lieblingstexten aller einreichenden KünstlerInnen, der MitarbeiterInnen des Salzburger Kunstvereins sowie der Kuratorin gestaltet, der die kollektive Imagination des Salzburger Kunstvereins verkörpern soll. (Övül Durmusoglu)

"Nowadays, in times of struggling with a global system crisis, we need to go forward, to invent and to discover new ways of thinking and doing. One possible strategy would be a simple principle of trial and error. In austria, we don’t have an established culture of trial and error, quite the contrary – we have a distaste for risk, preferring to apply existing solutions or put faith in past experiences rather than striving to discover and pioneer. We have not yet accepted the possibility and necessity of failed attempts, thinking that if someone has failed, they have failed forever, despite being solidly aware that errors often bring you a step forward, causing something new to emerge.

As an exhibition, trial and error explores the method itself, examining the meaning of both trial and of error for artists’ personal lives, for their artistic work and within specific pieces of art and society in general. The exhibition offers a framework for “trial and error” that makes artists and audience alike experience the meaning, chances, power and relativity of these two simple words."

Zwanzig Jahre nach der ersten und einzigen Ausgabe des Videokunstfestivals Querspur 1990 lädt Querspur forward am 26. November 2010 zu Wiederbegegnungen mit internationalen ProtagonistInnen der Videokunst. Im Zentrum steht eine von den KünstlerInnen selbst getroffene Auswahl an Videos aus verschiedenen Phasen der Medienkunstgeschichte – und das Gespräch darüber, welches Potenzial und welchen Stellenwert Video als künstlerisches Medium heute hat.

In 1990 the "fabrikanten" drew up the international festival of video art together with Brigitte Vasicek. Months of travelling and research precede the opening. During three days 66 works by artists from 13 countries run. It is the first time that a festival is not about a product exhibition of the last year. Instead of this newer and older works on the artistic aspects can be seen as well as a subject (“Between intimacy and radical uncovering”).

Durch geschicktes Arrangieren konstruiert Katharina Gruzei Bildzitate, die an unser kollektives Gedächtnis anknüpfen. Subtil transformiert sie jedoch deren Aussage und bezieht darin deutlich Stellung. Erkenntnisprozesse werden durch visuelle Collagen zugänglich gemacht, Wissensvermittlung durch Studien und Bildwelten angeboten.

In ihrer ersten Einzelschau im Offspace Periscope zeigt sie ein neues Werk, wo sie das Arbeiten mit Archivmaterial als künstlerische Strategie anwendet.

In der Ausstellung finden wir uns in einer visuellen Recherche wieder, die das fotografische Portrait in seinen Anfängen, der kriminologischen Verbrecherfotografie, thematisiert. Über die Entwicklung zur Massenkultur mithilfe des Passbildautomaten bis zum heutigen biometrischen Passfoto wird die Geschichte dieses Genres verfolgt. Dabei wird deutlich, wie sehr sich die ursprünglichen Bildkonventionen und Bemühungen den Verbrecherkörper zu vermessen und zu erfassen, bis heute gehalten haben. So werden heute in der Kriminologie Avatar-ähnliche Phantombilder am Computer generiert, die sich in Ausschnitt und Pose stets an die analogen Vorläufer halten.

Die Künstlerin entführt uns auf eine Zeitreise ins 19 Jh zu Bertillon und Galton und ihre Versuche den Menschen zu vermessen, zu erfassen und zu archivieren. Die Entstehung der Fotografie löste das für das Bürgertum konstituierende malerische Portrait ab und konnte sich als repressives und zugleich sozial besserstellendes Instrument entfalten.

“Während damals die kriminologische Fotografie neben der Erfassung des individuellen Verbrechers dazu diente ein konstitutives Außen zu definieren, werden wir heute im Zuge des biometrischen Passbildes alle als potenzielle Verbrecher fotografiert. Das führt zu einem nicht zu bändigendem Archiv potenzieller Verbrecher, das wiederum die Chance irrtümlicher Erkennung und Fehlverurteilung um einiges erhöht.”

Die Intervention, die die Künstlerin in die Collage einwebt, thematisiert die Erfassbarkeit und Wiedererkennung von Gesichtern auf spielerische Weise. Zugleich referiert sie auf die zunehmende Verbrecherparanoia und die Praxis Bürger in die Überwachungsarbeit einzubeziehen. Die üblichen Fahndungskopien nach Terroristen auf Flughäfen provozieren die Fragestellung, ab wann ein Gesicht universell wird und auf wie viele es angewandt werden kann.

Begleitet werden die “mugshots”, wie die Verbrecherfotos in den USA genannt werden, von genauen Richtlinien zu deren Erstellung und den dabei verwendeten Utensilien. Durch die ausschließliche Verwendung von Fotokopien thematisiert die Künstlerin das Verhältnis von Archiv und Fotografie bzw der Verbreitung von Original und Kopie. Die Materialien werden entauratisiert und visuell als Studie im Stil der Bürokratie ausgewiesen. Eine weitere Referenz auf die Fotokopie ist die Tatsache, dass die ersten öffentlich zugänglichen Kopiergeräte, umgebaute Passbildautomaten waren.

Frame it is taking place for the 1st time this year in Bad Gastein. It is an art festival with several venues and programs in late summer and autumn. The Frame Award is an open call photo competition within this festival accompanied by an exhibition in a hydroelectric power plant next to the Bad Gastein waterfall.

The jury decided to assign the Frame Award to my project "Heimat". It is a postcard series of 4 photographs I did in 2008. This time one of the sujets will be put up in the size of 4 x 6 meters in the main square of Bad Gastein. The other 3 are part of the exhibition in the power plant.

Besides the Award I am really excited to position this piece in public space which was initially also a reason for doing a postcard series of them. Bad Gastein, due to its tourism and clichè alpine look, additionally seems to be the perfect environment for this project.

The press conference will be held on a rope bridge up the mountain on 2100 meters. "Heimat I" will be uncovered in the Award ceremony on Sat 21th of August at 8pm.

The two Recognition Awards go to Nora Riedl and Judith Saupper. The photo show in the power plant involves also a selection of the other applicants of the open call.

Twenty six young artists from different countries are going to “land” in Modena (Italy) in the expository venue of the former Sant’Agostino Hospital, on the occasion of International Departure: Gate 10, a show promoted by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena, devoted to the students of some of the most important European institutions dealing with Photography and Fine Arts, from 12 June to 11 July 2010.

On display there will be the works of 26 students selected among 11 institutions of 6 different European countries, which distinguish themselves in the field of education.

The exhibition, curated by Filippo Maggia, intends to emphasize the work of young artists who are approaching the international art scene, giving them the opportunity to exhibit in an institutional contest and to confront themselves with other European “colleagues”. This is in line with the educational aims of Fondazione Fotografia, the cultural project promoted by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Modena in parallel with the creation of a collection of contemporary photographs.

2010 marks the kick-off of the TRIENNALE LINZ 1.0, an exhibition format that is to be newly established in Austria: a topical survey of art production in this country.

Linz continues with the impetus from the Capital of Culture year 2009 to present a compact selection of generations of artists significantly working in Austria today. Together, the State Gallery Linz, LENTOS Art Museum Linz, and the OK “Offenes Kulturhaus” Upper Austria show a representative cross-sectional time line through the current local art scene, positioning Linz as a center of Austrian contemporary art. Here it is not a question of constructing a concept of a nation, but rather of focusing on the art produced by an artist generation actively working in Austria with an international appeal.
Accompanied by projects and performances in public space, LENTOS, OK and the State Gallery artistically stir up the city of Linz in 2010.

A joint catalogue is published on the exhibition by the publishers Verlag Moderner Kunst Nürnberg with extensive documentation of the artists.

In her filmic and photographic works Katharina Gruzei focuses on socio-political, gender-specific and media-analytical issues. She has established a research-oriented photo archive based on mixed portrait photographs by August Sander in the collection of the Oberösterreichische Landesmuseen (Upper Austrian State Museums).

The matte collodion photographic prints by Sander from his years in Linz from 1901–1909 are shown between photographs of different provenance: historical studio portraits and amateur shots from the flea market hang side by side with Sander-reproductions and selfportraits of the author – predecessor and successor without hierarchical differentiation, without marking of Sander’s vintageprints through a museal advice to admire them. The anonymisation of the »masterpieces« and the »museal« upgrading of the prints – having become »found footage« – create space for comparisons. Correspondences are recognisable and make evident the degree to which motifs, compositions and poses follow the staging specifications of fixed pictorial canons. In a studio setting beyond this study, the artist has adopted fragments of this repertoire and has alienated them ironically. In this process, the unique copy-technology of the ferrotype refers to the forming of collective pictorial worlds through photographic reproduction. The gender-critical self-stagings as performances mix inconspicuously in the picture with the ladies and gentlemen..

Katharina Gruzei beschäftigt sich in Form von filmischen und fotografischen Arbeiten hauptsächlich mit gesellschaftspolitischen, geschlechtsspezifischen und medienanalytischen Fragestellungen. Ausgehend von einem Konvolut von Porträtfotografien August Sanders in der Sammlung der Oberösterreichischen Landesmuseen, hat sie ein rechercheorientiertes Fotoarchiv angelegt.

Die Mattkollodium-Abzüge von Sander aus seinen Linzer Jahren 1901–1909 werden zwischen Fotografien unterschiedlicher Provenienz gezeigt: Historische Studioporträts und Amateurfotografien vom Flohmarkt hängen neben Sander-Reproduktionen und Selbstporträts der Autorin – Vor- und Nachgänger ohne hierarchische Differenzierung, ohne Kenntlichmachung von Sanders Vintage-Prints durch eine museale Bewunderungsanweisung. Die Anonymisierung der »Meisterwerke« und die »museale Aufwertung « der zu »found footage« gewordenen Abzüge schaffen Raum für Vergleiche. Korrespondenzen werden erkennbar und verdeutlichen, wie sehr Motive, Kompositionen und Posen den Inszenierungsvorgaben fester Bildkanons folgen. Über diese Studie hinaus hat sich die Künstlerin in einer Studiokulisse Versatzstücke dieses Repertoires angeeignet und diese ironisch verfremdet. Dabei verweist die Unikat-Technik der Tintype auf die Formung kollektiver Bildwelten durch die fotografische Vervielfältigung. Die genderkritischen Selbstinszenierungen mischen (sich) als Performances im Bild unauffällig (unter) die Herrschaften (auf).

The presentation of artworks by young Austrian artists at Istanbul’s Gallery 5533 will feature a representative selection of contemporaryproductions. Videos, photography, objects, performances as well as audio installations are to reflect the artists’ personal experiences as well as their social and political backgrounds.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an evening with experimental electronic music, art projects and performances at Dogzstar Club Istanbul all aimed at stimulating productive exchanges and discussions. I will perform there for the first time as DJ and VJ under my synonym Image Recorder. The show was curated by Professor Dr. Martin Hochleitner (Director of the Gallery of the Federal Province of Upper Austria) together with the Department of Experimental Art of the University of Art and Industrial Design Linz (Andrea van der Straeten and Hubert Lobnig).

This exhibition in Istanbul constitutes the second part of an ongoing exchange between the Department of Experimental Art and the young and vibrant art scene of Istanbul. During their stay at Yildiz Technical University Istanbul under the Erasmus programme, Oona Valarie Schager and Ufuk Serbest (both students at the Department of Experimental Design) initiated, curated and organised the very first exhibition of young artists from Istanbul in Linz.

In April 2009, this show – Inspiring Stanbul – for the first time spotlighted the work of young Turkish
artists right at the heart of Linz while also representing the co-operation between the University of Art
and Industrial Design Linz and Linz 09 – European Capital of Culture.

Anadoma is a Filmfestival with focus on experimental, independent Film and Videos that encourages the artists and filmmakers to meet up for discussions. The program also includes an exhibition, performances and music acts. My piece "Dialoge I - IV" will be shown in the "Galerie auf Zeit" in a one screen version. The festival takes place in Braunschweig, Germany and is organized by students from the film department of the HBK Braunschweig.

I exhibited my video installation "L.A. Work Shift - Intersection of Lives and Highways" at the first issue of Anadoma two years ago. It was a outstanding experience for me and I have never seen such a well and careful organized student filmfestival before. Additionally they produced a great catalogue after the festival. I met great people there - excited to see them again this weekend...

Vom 28. - 31. Januar 2010 treffen sich in Braunschweig AutorenInnen experimenteller, unabhängiger Filme und Videos zum zweiten AnaDoma – Fest für Film und Video. Das Festivalteam, das überwiegend aus Studierenden der Filmklasse der HBK Braunschweig besteht, hat in den vergangenen Monaten aus über 200 Einreichungen mehr als 60 Beiträge aus den Bereichen Film, Video, Installation, Performance und Musik für das Festival ausgewählt.

Die Beiträge wurden von unabhängigen FilmemacherInnen und Studierenden verschiedener Kunsthochschulen u.a. aus Deutschland, Österreich, der Schweiz, den Niederlanden, der Türkei, Portugal, Italien oder Südamerika eingereicht. Die AutorenInnen und KünstlerInnen sind eingeladen, ihre Videos/Filme persönlich vorzustellen und zu diskutieren.

ModeratorInnen werden in die Programme einführen und die Gespräche mit den angereisten KünstlerInnen und dem Publikum einleiten.   Zudem werden in einer Ausstellung in der galerie auf zeit insgesamt zehn Installationen und Foto-Collagen zu sehen sein (Eröffnung am 28.01. um 21 Uhr). Im Abendprogramm wird es Konzerte und Soundperformances geben: Rodrigo Frenk (Braunschweig) mischt am Freitag live Sound und Bild, die Gruppe Topmodel (Berlin) startet bei uns ihre Tournee „Happy Funeral Of Pop“ und Daniel Dorsch und Henrike Kochta (Berlin) stellen ihr aktuelles Album „Tokyo Diary“ vor.

Die Ausstellung vereint Arbeiten von Katharina Gruzei (Fotografie, Video, Sound) und Moussa Kone (Zeichnung, Objekte) in einer Rauminstallation. Der kritische Umgang mit dem Medium selbst spiegelt sich in den gezeigten Werken und den darin dargestellten Situationen wider. Bühnenhafte Atmosphären und deren entrückte Protagonisten sind festgefroren in Momenten des Begehrens und der Auseinandersetzung mit sich selbst.

The exhibition combines the work of Katharina Gruzei (Photography, Video, Sound) and Moussa Kone (Drawing, Objects) in an installation at Charim Ungar Contemporary, Berlin. The critical intercourse with media itself is reflected within the work on display and its constructed situations. Stage like atmospheres and displaced protagonists are frozen in moments of desire and altercation with themselves.

About half a year ago Benjamin Fercher asked me to be his diploma supervisor. He was fascinated by Lumiere and Edison and wanted to work with film for a long time. We came up with the idea of working on the early films of the Lumieres by combining them with new footage. Aside planning on digital footage we realized one of our big desires - building a cinematograph and shooting on film...

 The project is discussing the work of the first film makers, with a reconstruction of the cinematograph and the comparison of the lumiere footage versus footage filmed with the reconstructed cinematograph, arranged as a short film. A cinematograph was rebuilt in collaboration with a mechatronic engineer. techniques based on the time when pictures started to run were used. this 35mm cinematograph is based on the lumiere cinematograph with small technical modifications for a better usability. for example the grabber film transportation system was replaced by the maltese cross transporting system.

It was Benjamin´s intention to feel the same adventure the early filmmakers felt, when they built their own cameras and started making their first shots, to later show this films in front of a crowd. The film, which will be screened, is based on the early lumiere recordings. It's a shortfilm were the original lumiere scenes, minidv recordings and shots filmed with the cinematograph will be arranged together. another focus of the film is the media perception of people in front of the camera that changed with the knowledge of the films existence.

The project reflects our passion for the medium film and reflects how we assimilate the time when pictures started to move.

The theme of the autumn exhibition is contemporary photography in Austria. The focus on photo artists who are either native to Carinthia or already represented in the Museum collection, as well as on young Austrian photo artists, gives an insight into current positions and works. The exhibition is arranged in thematic groups, placing the works of the younger generation in a context-related dialogue with photographs by established artists. The themes range from socio-political questions and a critical perception of the immediate living environment, to new approaches to landscapes and portraits.

Here the focus is on photography as image, and its surface structure between fiction and reality. Through the possibility of representing actions, many works are also linked with performances before the camera, so that film, video and cartoon animation are closely connected with the photographic image. Common to many works is a trend towards installative staging, together with an interdisciplinary approach in a combination of photography, video, sculpture and room installation. Overall, the exhibition shows the wide range of themes, motifs and technical possibilities available in contemporary photography.

Im Mittelpunkt der Herbstausstellung steht die zeitgenössische Fotografie in Österreich. Mit dem Fokus auf FotokünstlerInnen, die aus Kärnten stammen oder bereits in der Sammlung des Museums vertreten sind, sowie jungen FotokünstlerInnen aus Österreich, gibt die Ausstellung einen Einblick in aktuelle Positionen.

Die Ausstellung versucht gewisse Themengruppen zusammenzufassen und setzt die Arbeiten der jüngeren Generation in einen kontextbezogenen Dialog zu Fotografien bereits arrivierter KünstlerInnen. Die Bandbreite der Themen reicht von gesellschaftspolitischen Fragestellungen und einer kritischen Wahrnehmung der unmittelbaren Lebenswelt bis hin zu neuen Zugängen zum Landschaftsbild und zum Porträt. Die Fotografie wird dabei zum Fokus einer Thematisierung des Bildes und seiner Oberflächenstruktur zwischen Fiktion und Realität. Durch die Möglichkeit der Darstellung von Handlungsabläufen sind eine Reihe von Arbeiten auch mit einem performativen Agieren vor der Kamera verbunden. Film, Video und Animationstrickfilm stehen dabei in enger Verbindung zum fotografischen Bild. Gemeinsam ist vielen Arbeiten eine Tendenz zur installativen Inszenierung sowie ein interdisziplinärer Zugang in einer Verbindung von Fotografie, Video, Skulptur und Rauminstallation. Ingesamt zeigt die Ausstellung die große Bandbreite der Themen, Motive und technischen Möglichkeiten in der zeitgenössischen Fotografie.

Osredotoöa se na fotografske umetnice in umetnike, ki prihajajo s Koroükega ali so äe zastopani v zbirki muzeja, kakor tudi na mlade umetnice in umetnike iz celotne Avstrije ter omogoöa vpogled v trenutno ustvarjanje. Predstavljena bodo dela absolventov fotografskih razredov Dunajske akademije za upodabljajoöe umetnosti kot tudi Univerze za uporabno umetnost. Razstava poskuüa oblikovati doloöene tematske sklope in dela mlajüe generacije postavlja v kontekstualni dialog s fotografijami äe uveljavljenih umetnic in umetnikov.

Razpon tematik sega od druäbenopolitiönih vpraüanj in kritiönega dojemanja neposrednega äivljenjskega okolja pa vse do novih pristopov h krajini in portretu. Fotografija se ob tem osredotoöa na tematizacijo podobe in strukture njene povrüine med fikcijo in resniönostjo. Na podlagi moänosti prikaza daljüega poteka dogajanja je cela vrsta del povezana tudi s performativnim nastopom pred kamero. Film, video in animirani risani film so v tem primeru tesno povezani s fotografsko podobo. Ütevilnim delom je skupna teänja k instalativni inscenaciji, kot tudi interdisciplinarni pristop v povezovanju fotografije, videa, skulpture in instalacije v prostoru. Na sploüno pa razstava prikazuje velik razpon tematik, motivov in tehniönih moänosti v sodobni fotografiji.

La mostra autunnale è imperniata sulla fotografia contemporanea in Austria. Concentrandosi su artisti della fotografia di origine carinziana o già presenti nella collezione del museo nonché su fotografi della nuova generazione, la mostra offre uno squarcio delle tendenze attualmente in atto. In questo contesto vengono presentati lavori di diplomati delle classi di fotografia della Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste (Accademia viennese di arti figurative) e dell’Universität für angewandte Kunst (Università dell’arte applicata). La mostra si propone di individuare determinati gruppi tematici ed inserisce i lavori della nuova generazione in un dialogo contestuale con quelli di fotografi ormai affermati.

La gamma dei temi spazia da interrogativi di natura politico-sociale e da una percezione critica dell’ambiente circostante a nuovi approcci nell’affrontare il paesaggio ed il ritratto. La fotografia diviene così strumento per un esame dell’immagine in se stessa, con la sua struttura superficiale sospesa a metà tra finzione e realtà. Grazie alla possibiltà di rappresentare l’azione nel suo svolgersi, vi è tutta una serie di lavori dedicati all’azione filmata. Film, video e film d’animazione si presentano in stretta relazione con l’immagine fotografica. Ad accomunare molti dei

lavori è una tendenza all’allestimento installativo nonché un approccio interdisciplinare che collega fotografia, video, scultura ed installazione degli spazi. Nel complesso la mostra introduce al vasto repertorio di argomenti, motivi e possibilità tecniche presenti nella fotografia contemporanea.

No other product of popular culture has had a greater impact on the perception of the city and state of Salzburg than the musical and film "The Sound of Music”. Unknown to many Austrians and Salzburg locals, it has been forming the "foreign image” of Salzburg for decades, whereas the "self-image” is constantly being shifted toward the projections by the tourism industry.

With this backdrop artists are invited to explore foreign images manufactured by the products of popular culture and to illuminate the fields of tourism, National Socialism, folk culture, and gender in this context.

The exhibition brings together existing works that use "The Sound of Music” as a foundation on one hand, and on the other hand artists are invited to produce new artistic projects.

Kein anderes Produkt der Populärkultur ist für die Wahrnehmung von Stadt und Land Salzburg prägender als das Musical und der gleichnamige Film „The Sound of Music“. Vielen ÖsterreicherInnen und SalzburgerInnen unbekannt, bestimmt es nun bereits seit Jahrzehnten das „Fremdbild“ Salzburgs, wobei das „Selbstbild“ kontinuierlich von Touristikern in die Richtung der Projektionen von außen verschoben wird.

Dass Geschichte keine objektive Zusammenstellung von Fakten, sondern ein Prozess der Konstruktion ist, hat der englische Historiker Eric Hobsbawm in seinem Buch „The Invention of Tradition“ überzeugend dargelegt. Erfundene, d.h. in ihrer jeweiligen Gegenwart konstruierte, aber in eine bestimmte Vergangenheit zurückprojizierte Traditionen sollen als historische Fiktion dazu dienen, bestimmte Normen und Strukturen gegenüber einem gegenwärtigen Wandlungsdruck gesellschaftlich zu legitimieren und zu festigen.

Vor dem Hintergrund dieser These werden KünstlerInnen aufgefordert, sich mit der Frage dieser durch Produkte der Populärkultur hergestellten Traditionen zu beschäftigen und in diesem Zusammenhang besonders die Bereiche Tourismus, Nationalsozialismus, Volkskultur und Gender zu beleuchten.

Die Ausstellung wird einerseits bestehende Arbeiten, die auf Grundlage von „The Sound of Music“ entstanden sind, zusammenführen, andererseits werden KünstlerInnen zur Produktion neuer künstlerischer Projekte eingeladen.

The well known photographer August Sander lived in Linz for 9 years and mainly worked there as a photographer in a commercial photo studio. As I was asked to contribute to the One Night Stand series I decided to work with the Sander Archive as the Landesgalerie owns a little Sander Collection. The big Sander Collections are in Köln and the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

In his renown Series "people of the 20th Century" he attempted to make a outright portrait of a society. Practicing typological photography it is a doubtful project but by its existence it developed a constant discussion about typology and the colonial gaze. By entering the archive, mixing and rearranging the photographs with other picture sources I am picking up the artistic process Sander already did to finish his "people of the 20th Century" series as he was combining his negatives several times and then also put his commissioned work into the series. The selection will mainly focus on staging conventions, pose, typlogy and the constructing of representation.

August Sander, der für seine Werke " Menschen des 20.Jhd" und "Antlitz der Zeit" bekannt ist, hat von 1901 bis 1909 in Linz gelebt und als Fotograf in einem kommerziellen Portraitstudio gearbeitet. Unter dem Titel "Sander remixed" werden ausgewählte Sander Portraits, Fotografien aus der Fotosammlung der Künstlerin - bestehend aus Flohmarkt Fundstücken - und ihren künstlerischen Arbeit als Performances im Bild gezeigt.

Die künstlerische Arbeitsweise des neu sortierens und archivierens sowie das Mischen kommissionierter Fotos mit künstlerischen Fotos war bereits Sanders Praxis für "Die Menschen des 20.Jhd" und wird hier wieder aufgenommen. Dabei stehen die Konventionen der Portraitfotografie in Hinblick auf Pose, Inszenierung und Typologie im Zentrum der visuellen Recherche. Die Suche nach dem Original wird in den Ausstellungsraum übersetzt, die Sander Fotos formal entfetischisiert. Die individuelle Rahmung vermittelt den Eindruck, dass die Bilder Privaträumen entnommen wurden und treten im Ausstellungsraum in Dialog.

Radiospotting is a project by Bernd Kranebitter and Clemens Pichler. They asked interesting personalities with a connection to Linz to write a story about one spot in the city and then published an open call for sound artists to use these story as inspiration for a sound piece. The results are transmitted at the certain spots on Frequency 103 Mhz and while cruising through the city you can receive the sound art of the certain places you go through.

I asked my friend Margaret Noble to collaborate on a piece together. We chose the story around the old Cinematograph on the danube river and "That´s it Mom" is the track that came out of it. It will be transmitted for the next 13 Weeks. I also took the press photo for the project.

This exhibition is kind of an introduction to the residing artists of the international studio house that has just opened in Linz. There are regional artists who have a studio and internationals with a studio and a flat here. I moved in this July and I really appreciate the great space and view on danube river.

Trying to find a topic for the show without knowing each other nor the others work was pretty difficult. Anyways, we figured out a better way to deal with the old architecture in the exhibition hall - avoiding to use the walls... hope to see you for the reception!

FOTOGALERIE WIEN’s theme of focus for the year is dedicated to PERFORMANCE IN IMAGE AND IN MEDIA TRANSFER.
The title of this exhibition series refers to the complex relationship between performance and image: The ephemeral quality of performance in its form as a sequence of actions intersects with the fixation of performance through representational media, such as photography and video. In contrast to traditional perspectives that define performance as the simultaneous presence of both artist and viewer in one space and time, the three exhibitions present primarily performances that were produced for the camera or performative installations. As a result, the opportunity for alternative receptions of performance is made possible.

The second exhibition – PERFORMANCE II: Transfer and Translation – focuses on the possibilities and forms for the transfer of performance to various artistic media. The play of live elements and the conditions of their recording, documentation, and reproduction through photography and video influences these translations of performance. With the alteration of the courses of action through technical means and the manipulation of image material, conventional perspectives are avoided: The seven artists in this exhibition develop new forms of performance using interactive sound and image installations, the staging of objects, technical video experiments, and RNA laboratory images.

Der diesjährige Schwerpunkt der FOTOGALERIE WIEN widmet sich der PERFORMANCE IM BILD UND IM MEDIALEN ÜBERTRAG. Der Titel der Ausstellungsreihe verweist auf die komplexe Beziehung zwischen Performance und Bild: Die Flüchtigkeit der Performance in ihrer Form als Handlungsablauf trifft auf die Fixierung der Performance durch bildgebende Medien wie Fotografie und Video. Die drei Ausstellungen präsentieren, entgegen einer traditionellen Perspektive, in der Performances vor allem durch die gleichzeitige räumliche und zeitliche Anwesenheit von KünstlerInnen und BetrachterInnen definiert werden, vorwiegend Performances für die Kamera und performative Installationen. So werden alternative Rezeptionen von Performances möglich.

Die zweite Ausstellung – PERFORMANCE II : Übertragung und Übersetzung – fokussiert auf die Möglichkeiten und Formen der Übertragung von Performance in verschiedene künstlerische Medien. Das Spiel mit Live-Elementen und den Bedingungen ihrer Aufzeichnung, Dokumentation und Reproduktion durch Fotografie und Video prägt diese Übertragungen. Durch den Eingriff in die Handlungsabläufe mittels technischer Möglichkeiten und Manipulationen des Bildmaterials werden konventionelle Perspektiven vermieden: Die sieben KünstlerInnen der Ausstellung entwickeln durch interaktive Sound- und Bildinstallationen, Objektinszenierungen, Videotechnikexperimente und RNA-Laborbilder neuartige Formen von Performances.

Johanna Diehl and me are currently doing a teaching assistance at this summer academy in Austria. Besides an intense process of a collaborative image in the class of 19 Students we are having an awesome time with the wonderful people gathering around this place.

This is my first time assisting whereas I took marvellous summer courses of Katharina Sieverding and Valie Export as a student here before.

Course programme

Every (documentary) photograph appears to prove: this is how it was. As producers and viewers, we become part of a reality from which we are fortunate enough to be shielded – being at once inside and outside, present and absent. We take as our field of activity this dialectical relationship inherent in the medium of photography, between the actuality of our experience and the absence of the references. Since memories are always inseparably associated with changes, we want to think about constructions of realities.

Starting from the present, we will invent past events – different stories, different interpretations – in order to provide an eventful past with a "de-ranged" future and to offer resistance to the present. We will start by working out our ideas and how to render them pictorially. The second week will be devoted to presentation and execution, with special attention to forms of display. Here the boundaries with other media, such as performance, sculpture and painting, will be explored. Finally, we will concentrate on designing the final exhibition, deciding on how the individual narrations can be combined in a dialogical and meaningful relationship; we will also produce our own publication.  Instruction will be offered in photographic techniques. Students should bring their own ideas, cameras and all the materials they wish to use.

Media as projection space for narrative fantasies and internal states

If media stimulates our internal states as narrative structure of imagination and interpretation, which process is then decisive between the boundaries of collective memory and personal fantasies?

External spaces provide significant influences on 'cultural creativity' whereas projection of internal imagery can be read as the production of culture itself. How can artwork give inspiration to textual production without repeating or illustrating its content?

On the other hand – what happens when textual production tries to describe aesthetic processes?

Art establishes a floating balance of the ambiguity between explainable reality and associations, which are evoked from unconscious resources when our semantically disciplined 'production of meaning' fails.

An example for cross-frontier inspiration will be given by the installation mode of the project “Working in Los Angeles” where the production of imagination is likewise to the process of reading a book.

The affinity of photography and theory-production towards pretended objectiveness exists in the apparent absence of the researching Subject. The emerging of theoretical essays in the 20th century that include the researchers position go hand in hand with the arise of artistic investigation of the assumed 'mechanical objectiveness' in photographic images - deriving from the first steps of photography as scientific tool.

The so-called 'generating' of an image and its politics of spectatorship will be discussed within art projects concerning self-reflective theory production.

The photographs of the series “Heimat” are documentary shots of an erotic photography workshop held in Austria for which I have been booked as lighting assistant. The project focusses on the production conditions of erotic photography, the male gaze and the endless loop of constructing “Heimat”. (Heimat is a term that has no equal word in english – it is connected to homeland, stereotyping and the emotinal connection to ones origin.)

In this case the photographs recall postcards with the “nasty joke” available aside alpine slopes and tourist sites. The endless repitition of alpine clichès including erotic immaginations of sex obsessed alpine girls (Dirndl) or sayings like “there are no sins in the alps” collide with the tough reality of erotic image production. Here one sees rented locations and underpaid, freezing models from eastern europe trying to pose like lascivious “Alm Amazones” whereas the photographers are acutely transported with joy.

The postcards document conditions of work and evoke the vivid discussion on representation and the male gaze. The framing of the image exhibits the act of picture making itself without exposing the identity of the photographers. Altough the vision of the artist - in this case photographer of second sight - is observant, the sharpness of this gaze reminds us that photographic images never generate themselves.

Die Fotografien zum Projekt Heimat sind dokumentarische Aufnahmen eines Erotik Fotografie Workshops in Österreich. Im Fokus des Projekts stehen die Produktionsbedingungen dieser Erotikfotografie und das stetige Reproduzieren von “Heimat”. Die Postkarten erinnern an jene Grußkarten mit dem “schmutzigen Witz”, die man in Läden abseits der Piste oder dem See erwerben kann um Urlaubsgrüße aus den Alpen zu schicken.

Die hier angesprochene Almerotik spielt die absurden Klischeebilder der Alpenregionen endlos durch. Sprüche wie “Auf der Alm gibts ka Sünd” und Vorstellungen von sexbesessenen “Dirndln” kollidieren mit Produktionsrealitäten, die fernab des Klischees liegen. So sind es hier angemietete Inszenierungsorte und unterbezahlte tschechische Models, die frierend versuchen die lüsternen “Almamazonen” darzustellen während die Fotografen ihrer Entzückung kaum standhalten können.

“re-presenting” zeigt eine Performance im Bild, die sich in die frühe bürgerliche Studiofotografie und Selbstinszenierung von Fotografen einreiht. Dabei bilden Pose und geschlechterspezifische Inszenierung das Zentrum der Auseinandersetzung. Blickt man auf die frühen “Carte de Visite” Abbildungen so fällt die dekorativ passive Dastellung der Frau als Konvention auf – Abbildungen bei der Arbeit oder mit ihrem Arbeitsgerät wurden ausgelassen.

Die Frage nach Sichtbarkeit von Fotografinnen und deren Selbstinszenierung steht einer Abbildungstradition stolz posierender Fotografen und Wissenschaftlern gegenüber. In derhistorischen Technik der Nassplattenfotografie wird eine Repräsentation von mir als Fotografin mit meinen Arbeitsgeräten in ein Konvolut von Fotografen-Selbstportraits eingeschleust und verweist auf die fehlende Repräsentation arbeitender Frauen. Durch diezeitliche Verortung der Fototechnik und meiner Erscheinung wird ein Irritationsmomentevoziert, der auf die Manipulierbarkeit von Geschichtsschreibung hinweist.

Im Bilderzyklus „Fullmoon“ von Katharina Gruzei geht es um Jugendliche bei Nacht, um das Beschreiben jener Räume, welche sie sich bei Tage angeeignet haben, und welche im nächtlichen Szenario eine gänzlich andere Bedeutung erlangen.

Die Künstlerin interessiert sich in ihrer Arbeit grundsätzlich für Menschen und deren gelebte Umgebungen, wobei sie nach der Beziehung zwischen den von ihr porträtierten Subjekten und den sie umgebenden Räumen und Objekten forscht. Sie porträtiert Jugendliche an den Randzonen von städtischen oder dörflichen Wohngegenden, teils umgeben von Natur, wie wir sie in unseren städtischen Parks vorfinden, oder an Orten, wo tagsüber Alltags- oder Freizeitbeschäftigungen stattfinden. Ihre Protagonisten posieren in statischer Haltung, untätig, wie Außerirdische, Schauobjekte, deren Dasein auf eine andere Realität verweist. Auch die sie umgebenden örtlichen Situationen haben nun in der Nacht jene geschäftige Bedeutung verloren, die ihnen bei Tage zukommt. Und wir sehen im Raum befindliche Alltagsgegenstände, welche auf deren Benutzbarkeit bei Tage verweisen, und die nun nachts verlassen und zweckentfremdet scheinen.

Die Künstlerin verwendet das Mondlicht als Hauptlicht für ihre ausschließlich analog gefertigten „Lichtbilder“, wobei sie die nächtliche Lichtquelle Mond auch inhaltlich aktiv thematisiert. Die Jugendlichen blicken teilweise - gemeinsam mit der Fotokamera - Richtung Mond, in anderen Fotografien sind es wiederum die dargestellten Personen und Objekte selber, welche vom Mondlicht angestrahlt werden, und somit indirekt diese Lichtquelle andeuten. Der Mond wird in dieser Arbeit aber nicht nur als Lichtquelle thematisiert, sondern erlangt eine besondere Bedeutung als ferner Ort jugendlicher Sehnsüchte, als magisches Objekt für eine tief greifende nächtliche Erkenntnis.

Durch die Langzeitbelichtung erreicht die Künstlerin eine Helligkeit im Dunkeln, welche die beleuchteten Objekte und Personen aus ihrem Kontext stärker und heller heraustreten lässt als bei Tage. Die Objekte und Situationen erlangen im Mondlicht eine herausragende Bedeutung, während Hintergründe geheimnisvoll im Dunkeln versinken. Aber die Nacht lässt die Konturen verwischen, und Einbildung und Wirklichkeit verschmelzen, wodurch wir uns auch als Betrachter auf ein Experiment einlassen müssen, welches die Künstlerin hier initiiert.

Katharina Gruzei greift hier zudem ausgiebig in die Trickkiste der Anleihen aus dem Fundus kollektiver Bilder aus anderen Gattungen, wie z.B. dem Kino, der Werbefotografie, oder bei Meisterwerken der Kunstgeschichte, welche die Stimmung und Inhalte der einzelnen Fotografien maßgeblich mitbestimmen. Die Verdoppelung des Blickes des porträtierten Protagonisten durch die Fotokamera verweist auf jene nostalgische Atmosphäre, wie wir sie von den großformatigen Tafelbildern Caspar David Friedrichs kennen, dessen Protagonist gemeinsam mit dem Bildbetrachter sehnsüchtig in die Ferne schaut. Diese Verknüpfung der Bildanordnungen aus der Zeit der Romantik und dem Höhepunkt der Aufklärung und ihrer Sehnsucht danach, den Blick über die vor uns existierende Wirklichkeit hinaus zu richten, wird hier mit einer nächtlichen Szenerie verknüpft, in der die Nacht als Möglichkeit für eine junge Generation von Menschen entdeckt wird, den tieferen Sinn ihres Daseins zu reflektieren. Andere Protagonisten posieren im Bild wie auf Werbefotos, so als wollten sie dem Betrachter einen Spiegel vorhalten. Auch Elemente des Unheimlichen und Anleihen beim Horrorfilm aus dem Hollywoodkino kennzeichnen einige Arbeiten, und lösen gleichzeitig Schauder aus, wie auch das Versprechen einer besonderen Erkenntnis. Durch teilweise Überblendungen wird das Übertreten des realen Körpers in eine jenseitige Sphäre, die Überwindung des physischen Körpers und die Sehnsucht nach Befreiung von den Gesetzen des Tages thematisiert.

Katharina Gruzei reduziert in ihren Arbeiten das Laute, Ablenkende der alltäglichen Welt, um in der Lage zu sein, sich auf wesentliche Elemente und Einsichten zu konzentrieren.

Il ciclo d´immagini “Fullmoon” di Katharina Gruzei tratta di giovani di notte, della descrizione di quei spazi che essi si sono appropriati di giorno e che nello scenario notturno assumono tutto un altro significato.

Nel suo lavoro l´artista interessa in linea generale l´uomo e l´ambiente da lui vissuto, mentre indaga il rapporto tra i soggetti da lei ritratti e gli spazi ed oggetti che li circondano. Ella ritrae giovani alle periferie di centri urbani o rurali, in parte nella natura, come la ritroviamo nei nostri parchi cittadini, o in altri posti per il tempo libero o di ricreazione diurna. I suoi protagonisti si presentano in atteggiamento statico, senza far niente, come extraterrestri o oggetti d´esposizione, la cui presenza rinvia ad una altra realtà. Durante la notte il contesto della situazione ha perso anche quell´significato operosa che gli spetta di giorno. Vediamo oggetti dell´uso quotidiano che rinviano al loro uso diurno e che ora di notte appaiono abbandonati ed estraniati.

L´artista usa la luce della luna come fonte principale d´illuminazione per le sue “immagini” create rigorosamente in maniera analoga, tematizzando la luce notturna della luna anche in senso qualitativo. I giovani in parte volgono lo sguardo – assieme all´apparecchio fotografico – verso la luna, in altre fotografie sono le persone stesse e gli oggetti raffigurati ad essere illuminati dalla luce della luna, e tematizzano quindi in modo indiretto questa fonte di luce. In queste opere la luna viene tematizzata non soltanto come fonte di luce, ma assume un significato speciale come luogo lontano di giovani desideri [brame], come oggetto magico per una profonda catarsi conoscitiva notturna.

Attraverso la lunga esposizione l´artista raggiunge una luminosità nell´oscurità che lascia spiccare gli oggetti e le persone illuminati più forti e più chiari rispetto al loro contesto che di giorno. Alla luce della luna gli oggetti e le situazioni [gli scenari] assumono un significato di spicco, mentre gli sfondi sprofondano misteriosamente nel buio. Ma la notte fa sparire i contorni, e immaginazione e realtà si fondono, cosicché anche noi come osservatori dobbiamo partecipare all´esperimento presentatoci qui dall´artista.

Inoltre Katharina Gruzei fa largo uso di prestiti dal fondo di immagini collettive di altri generi come per esempio il cinema, la fotografia pubblicitaria o famose opere d´arte che influenzano in maniera determinante l´atmosfera ed il contenuto delle singole fotografie. Il raddoppiamento dello sguardo dei protagonisti ritratti dalla macchina fotografica rinvia a quell´atmosfera nostalgica che conosciamo dai grandi dipinti di Caspar David Friedrich, il cui protagonista brama assieme all´osservatore in lontananza. Questa composizione della disposizione figurativa dell´epoca del Romanticismo e del culmine dell´illuminismo e della loro nostalgia di rivolgere lo sguardo oltre mondo reale dinnanzi a noi, qui viene collegata ad una scena notturna, dove la notte viene scoperta come possibilità per una generazione giovane di riflettere il senso profondo della loro vita. Altri protagonisti si mettono in posa come su foto pubblicitarie,e se volessero mostrare all´osservatore uno specchio. Anche elementi inquietanti e elementi tratti dai film dell´orrore di Hollywood controddistinguono alcune opere, e al contempo suscitano brividi nonché la promessa di un´esperienza speciale. Attraverso dissolvenze parziali viene tematizzato il trapasso del corpo reale in una sfera ultraterrena, il superamento del corpo fisico e la nostalgia per la liberazione di regole della vita.

Nelle sue opere Katharina Gruzei riduce il fragore ed il fuorviante del mondo quotidiano per potersi concentrare su elementi e verità essenziali.

SITTING, STANDING, TARRYING IN THE DREAM OF THE OTHER

A certain déjà-vu may strike any observer of Katharina Gruzei’s icons of daily life: the scenes appear to recall other scenes – even if one is not sure, which ones; or - more strangely - even if one is definitely sure not to have seen any of those other scenes before. Secondness without a first element, as philosophers might call it. A sentence from Dashiell Hammett’s novel “Red Harvest” may give a hint for understanding this paradox: “They were sitting so still as if they wanted to show how still they were sitting.” Exactly in this way, people in Gruzei’s images are not only just there; they rather show something about their being (there). The photographer, proceeding by analogue technique with long exposure, transfers these people, with their help, into tableaux vivants of themselves.

At the same time, Katharina Gruzei’s images make clear that nothing is more revealing about a certain reality than its dreams of a different one: Material traces of remote, collective dreams (such as, for example, the proverbial “American Dream”) are inserted into every intimate, individual environment - functioning at the same time as the attempts of its transgression and as the definitive signature of what it actually is.
